(NewsNation) — NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ has called the Oklahoma Senate races for Republican incumbent James Lankford and U.S. Rep. Markwayne Mullin.
In an unusual twist this election cycle, both of Oklahoma’s U.S. Senate seats were on the ballot Tuesday.
A citizen of the Cherokee Nation, Mullin is now poised to become the first Native American in the U.S. Senate in nearly 20 years.
Decision Desk HQ also called the state’s gubernatorial race for incumbent Republican Kevin Stitt.
Stitt fought off Democrat Jay Hofmeister. The race became unexpectedly close in a state where there are no Democrats serving in Congress and where a Democrat has not been in the governor’s mansion in more than a decade.
Lankford and Mullin have both coasted to election victory, keeping Oklahoma’s two U.S. Senate seats in the GOP column.
Oklahoma held a special election to fill the seat of Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe. Inhofe was elected to a six-year term in 2020 but announced he will be retiring in January of 2023.
On Tuesday, 470 seats in the U.S. Congress — 35 Senate seats and all 435 House seats — are up for election. These elections will determine who has control over the two branches of Congress, and ultimately, who sets the agenda for President Joe Biden`s remaining years in office.
