(NewsNation) — A man is dead following an hoursloung standoff and shootout in Pittsburgh that ensued after law enforcement attempted to serve an eviction notice.

Pittsburgh Public Safety said city emergency medical service responders pronounced the man dead shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday after the siege that forced evacuations from the city’s Garfield neighborhood.

The incident began when sheriff’s deputies attempted to serve an eviction notice to a male squatter. An attorney who worked on the eviction told NewsNation the deputies had been warned the man might be difficult to remove.

After deputies arrived, the man began shooting, with hundreds of gunshots being reported. Law enforcement evacuated the neighborhood, including pulling one resident from their house into a SWAT vehicle.

The man was pronounced dead at 5:08 p.m. E.T., but police did not specify how he died.

“He had a lot of ammunition in that house,” Allegheny County Sheriff Kevin Kraus said.

A sergeant leading the eviction notice detail suffered an injury unrelated to gunfire and is doing OK, sheriff’s office spokesman Mike Manko said.

A state police spokesperson said drones were used during the siege, and a large number of police and other first responders were at the scene, just a few blocks from a children’s hospital.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
