KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A pair of former Kansas City Chiefs players are auctioning off their Super Bowl rings this weekend in part of what’s expected to be the biggest sports memorabilia auction in history.

More than $42 million has already been bid on items in Heritage Auctions Summer Platinum Sports Auction.

The auction features Babe Ruth’s jersey from when he “called his shot” which had reached bids of $15 million Thursday. But it features something else that’s pretty rare, a pair of player’s rings from Chiefs Super Bowl victories.

“Obviously players are more reluctant to give up their rings and less likely so we see them less often. Every auction we have there’s a handful of championship rings, but usually they are front office.”

The day Chiefs players and staff members get their Super Bowl ring has become a favorite springtime event for Chiefs fans.

“We tape it, we watch it, examine them. We see the pictures, watch the videos of the guys getting them, it would be amazing to have that actual ring not just a replica that we get every year,” Chiefs fan Corey Coker said.

“It’s pretty amazing everybody wants one,” another fan Erica Kriesel said.

Now you can have that chance. Former Chiefs cornerback Bashaud Breeland and defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth are auctioning off the rings each won in Super Bowl LIV and LVII respectively.

NewsNation affiliate WDAF went to pregame tailgates at Arrowhead to see how much fans would pay for an actual player’s Super Bowl ring.

“If they are a die-hard Chiefs fan they may pay 5-10 thousand dollars maybe even more,” Josh Mitchell said.

“If you get someone who is in the constant rotation and we’ve seen him play over and over I could see paying upwards of 50 grand,” Coker said.

The ring from the 2019 season that pays homage to the 50 years between Championships was just under $50,000 including fees with one day to go Thursday. The one from the Chiefs’ victory over the Eagles and its 609 diamonds was $54,000.

According to Heritage Auctions, the jewelry alone in the rings is worth $20,00, even if it wasn’t a Super Bowl ring. Fans have mixed feelings about the rings being auctioned off.

“I just feel like they obviously are not very important to them otherwise they wouldn’t get rid of them,” Kriesel said.

“Me personally I played sports in college and high school I would never sell my stuff I think that’s a really cool keepsake at the same time I get it,” Mitchell said.

Breeland has faced legal troubles since the Chiefs’ first Super Bowl victory over the 49ers. Stallworth wasn’t with the team by the time of Super Bowl LVII.

The auction for Breeland’s Super Bowl LIV ring can be found here.

Stallworth’s Super Bowl LVII ring is available here.

For those on a tighter budget, a staff member’s ring from the same game was available for about $9,000. The full auction has more than 1,000 items for bid with ending dates August 23-25.
