(NewsNation) — Attorney Mark Geragos, who represents Erik and Lyle Menendez, tells “Banfield” that Netflix’s new series, “Monsters,” is a horrible portrayal of the case.
“It’s hard to believe 20 years later that anybody could have given voice to any of this nonsense, because it’s demonstrably untrue,” Geragos said.
He said the show relies on now-debunked stereotypes surrounding rape against men, homophobia and the brothers’ own relationship.
The Menendez brothers were convicted of murdering their father and mother in August 1989. They said they acted in self-defense, citing years of abuse, and are hoping the case will be reopened.
The series features a supposedly incestuous relationship between the pair, just one of many salacious additions to their story made by screenwriter Ryan Murphy, which Geragos referred to as “ridiculous.”
