Ad coalition to ‘discontinue’ after Musk’s X files lawsuit

Elon Musk's X filed a lawsuit against WFA and GARM.

(NewsNation) — The World Federation of Advertisers said it will shutter its Global Alliance for Responsible Media initiative after the advertising coalition was sued by Elon Musk’s X.

X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter, filed the lawsuit against the group over what it said was an advertising boycott undertaken after Musk bought X in 2022.

The World Federation of Advertisers launched the Global Alliance for Responsible Media in the wake of the Christchurch shooting in 2019 in what it said was an effort to “address digital safety.”

In the lawsuit against, X accused the group of conspiring to “collectively withhold billions of dollars in advertising revenue.”

The statement from the Federation said the allegations from X were the driving force behind the disbandment.

“GARM is a small, not-for-profit initiative, and recent allegations that unfortunately misconstrue its purpose and activities have caused a distraction and significantly drained its resources and finances,” the coalition said. “GARM therefore is making the difficult decision to discontinue its activities.”
