(NewsNation) —Entertainment mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs will stay in jail as he awaits trial on sex trafficking and other charges after being denied bail a second time Wednesday.
Combs is accused of leading a criminal enterprise that includes allegations of assaulting several women. A different judge Tuesday had also denied his lawyers’ request for bail, remanding him to custody pending trial.
Lawyers for Combs had offered a new judge a $50 million bail package — using his mansion as collateral — in exchange for releasing him to home detention with GPS monitoring.
However, U.S. District Judge Andrew L. Carter ruled that Combs’ plan — which also included strict limitations on visitors — was “insufficient” to ensure the safety of the community and the integrity of his case.
Carter, agreeing with prosecutors who fought to keep Combs in jail, found that “no condition or set of conditions” governing his release could guard against the risk of him threatening or harming witnesses — a central charge in his case.
In an indictment, officials accused Combs of being involved in sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson and other crimes since 2008. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
“Combs abused, threatened and coerced victims to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation and conceal his conduct,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said.
Defense lawyer Marc Agnifilo says he will now ask the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn Carter’s ruling and release Combs. In the meantime, he wants Combs moved from the Brooklyn lockup, which has been plagued by rampant violence and horrific conditions, to a jail in New Jersey. Carter said decisions on placement are entirely up to the federal Bureau of Prisons.
