Gilgo Beach suspect’s kids ‘unfortunate bystanders:’ Attorney

(NewsNation) — The children of Gilgo Beach killings suspect Rex Heuermann have “come to grips” with the charges their father faces and know the legal process is far from over, according to their attorney.

“They’re on this sort of twisted carousel ride that is not of their own making at all,” attorney Vess Mitev told NewsNation’s “Elizabeth Vargas Reports.”

Mitev represents Heuermann’s adult children, Victoria Heuermann and Christoper Sheridan, whom he describes as “unfortunate bystanders” to the accusations that their father “meticulously planned and executed six separate murders,” as Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said Thursday.

Mitev stressed Tierney has also said these allegations have nothing to do with his clients, who understand their nightmare is far from over.

“This is a grim marathon. They’re here for it. It’s not a sprint. They know that. They’ve come to grips with that. If it takes 30 years to commit these acts, it’s not going to be resolved in 30 months,” he said.

“They are standing tall in the face of searing adversity,” said Mitev. “If this had happened to you, or me, or anyone we know, I think we would have crumbled into sawdust by now.”

“Just trying the best they can, putting one foot in front of the other and trying to pick up the pieces as they’re simultaneously being torn down. That’s their life. That’s their existence,” he added.
