(NewsNation) — The Memphis Police Department is investigating after a popular local DJ was found decapitated in his home, per reports.
Rick Buchanan, known as “Slick Rick” but unrelated to the rapper who goes by the same moniker, was found Wednesday afternoon by his brother, John Buchanan, who spoke with FOX13 about the bizarre crime scene.
Buchanan told the outlet that a neighbor had called him shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday, and he rushed over to his brother’s home on the 4500 block of Angel Avenue in the Berclair neighborhood and found the back door open.
“The front door was locked, but the back door was wide open,” Buchanan said. “The iron door was open also, and I walked in, and I found him and called 911. It was terrible. At first, I thought his coat was up over his head because it was like he was cold or something. So, I ran out and ran back in and realized it wasn’t that. It was something worse.”
Buchanan had been decapitated, and there were other “weird” aspects to the crime scene, his brother said.
“A lot of things were weird,” he added. “He had his keys still in his hand. His pants were pulled down to his feet and the back door was wide open, so that’s the weird stuff.” The DJ’s dog was also out in the yard, which Buchanan said was unusual.
Buchanan said he last spoke to his brother about a week before, and had “no idea” what could have happened.
“We just are securing the property,” Buchanan said. “Making funeral arrangements. Taking care of my mom.” His family also plans to adopt his brother’s dog, Lucky.
The Memphis Police Department was investigating, but has not yet publicly released any information about the crime.
“Slick Rick” Buchanan was a local DJ for decades, but had reportedly slowed down in recent years after he survived being shot during a robbery in 2014.
