Mother arrested after six-year-old caught with gun at school

Ke'erinie King (SCSO)

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman was arrested and then released from jail without paying bond after police say her six-year-old son was caught with a gun at a Memphis Shelby County School in Tennessee on Thursday.

Ke’erinie King, 22, is charged with child abuse, child neglect or endangerment, carrying a weapon on school property, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

On August 5, officers responded to an armed party call at Geeter K-8 School on 4649 Horn Lake Road where an MSCS Resource Officer says a six-year-old student was passing around a Ruger 9mm handgun to other students in his class.

MPD says a school staff member took the handgun after finding it in the student’s backpack. The handgun was reported stolen after officers said they checked the serial number.

During the investigation, police say the mother, identified as Ke’erinie King, admitted that the gun was hers and that she bought it from an unknown person.

King was arrested and taken to jail at that time.

She was released from jail on her own recognizance the same day and is due back in court Friday morning.
