A delicious invasion: Cicada cakes swarm suburban bakery

HIGHWOOD, Ill. — The impending cicada-geddon has everyone talking. And one suburban bakery is creating quite a (forgive us) buzz, with a delicious offering in honor of the noisy critters.

The Bent Fork Bakery will begin selling cicada-shaped mini cakes this week.

Liz Bearwald and her husband Michael own the Highwood, Illinois sweet spot.

And we probably have all heard by now that this summer, for the first time in 200 years, two types of cicadas will be emerging.

Not to be outdone, Liz has been holding on to a special pan for 17 years just to make the tasty cakes again.

The individual cakes are about 3 inches long and come in your choice of yellow or chocolate cake with white chocolate wings. It is then covered in chocolate ganache. And absolutely no cicadas involved.

“We hope they fly off the shelves,” Bearwald told WGN News in an email. “People can order them ahead of time or just come in (to the bakery.)

The Bent Fork Bakery is located at 335 Waukegan in Highwood, Illinois. They can be reached at 247-926-4438
