(NewsNation) — Two iconic food and beverage companies are teaming up to offer a new college football-themed treat: a Krispy Kreme doughnut flavored by Dr Pepper.

“Two of America’s most loved flavors are about to become one amazing gameday sensation to make this the sweetest kickoff to football season ever,” according to a news release from Krispy Kreme.

The Dr. Pepper Kickoff Doughnut is Krispy Kreme’s original glazed donut topped with Dr Pepper flavored frosting, sprinkles and a Dr Pepper logo made from white chocolate.

It is one of three offerings in the “Kickoff Collection” that Krispy Kreme is selling to mark the return of college football. The other two are a buttercream-flavored goalpost and green icing atop a glazed doughnut and an unglazed doughnut with cream filling and topped with chocolate.

While not directly linked to college football, Krispy Kreme is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina and gained its original fame as the South’s most popular doughnut chain.

Founded in Texas, Dr Pepper is often considered the top soft drink in the South. Unknown is whether Dr Pepper might include the Krispy Kreme doughnut in the seventh season of its “Fansville” commercials, in which residents of a fictional college town spoof various trends in the game.

The concept was preceded by a four-year campaign featuring “Larry Culpepper,” a Dr. Pepper stadium vendor who claimed to have invented the college football playoffs.

Earlier this year, Dr Pepper announced a deal with Jack Link’s meat snacks for a meat stick “inspired by the flavors of Dr Pepper.” The makers of Peeps also sold a Dr Pepper-flavored version of its ubiquitous Easter candy.
