LOS ANGELES (NewsNation Now) —  Rapper Tory Lanez is charged with assaulting Megan Thee Stallion, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

The 28-year-old rapper, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, is charged with one felony count each of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, personal use of a firearm, and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle.

Megan Thee Stallion, whose legal name is Megan Pete, was shot after a party in the Hollywood Hills on July 12. The two got into an argument while riding in an SUV. Peterson is accused of shooting several times at her feet and wounding her after she exited the vehicle.

He also faces a gun allegation and that he personally inflicted great bodily injury.

More than a month after the incident she said for the first time that the fellow hip-hop artist was the person who shot her.

“Yes … Tory shot me. You shot me and you got your publicist and your people going to these blogs lying,” Pete said in an Instagram Live video in August. “Stop lying. Why lie? I don’t understand.”

Peterson’s arraignment is scheduled for October 13. Deputy District Attorney Kathy Ta of the Family Violence Division is prosecuting the case.

If convicted, he faces a possible maximum sentence of 22 years and eight months in prison, according to the announcement.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.
