Democratic staffer ‘no longer’ employed after Trump shooting post

Former President Donald Trump is "fine" despite an attempt on his life during a campaign rally on Saturday.

(NewsNation) — A former staff member of Mississippi Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson is now under investigation by federal agents after a social media post suggesting she supported an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

“I don’t condone violence but please get you some shooting lessons so you don’t miss next time ooops that wasn’t me talking,” Jacqueline Marsaw wrote in a now-deleted Facebook post, The Natchez Democrat reported.

Marsaw, who was a field office manager at Thompson’s Natchez office, is “no longer” in the congressman’s employment.

“I was made aware of a post made by a staff member and she is no longer in my employment,” Thompson said in a statement, according to Fox News.

Marsaw’s post was written shortly after the FBI said that a 20-year-old gunman attempted to assassinate the former president at a campaign rally Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania. The gunman was shot and killed seconds after Trump was shot; he acted alone and was not previously on the FBI’s radar.

After the post, the Mississippi GOP urged Thompson to fire Marsaw and called on Mississippi Democrats to dismiss Marsaw’s statements.

Marsaw told the Natchez Democrat that she removed the post after a manager on Thompson’s staff asked her to.

“I got overwhelmed in the moment. I am a diehard Democrat,” she said.

Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten told the Natchez Democrat that he received a call from Secret Service agents Sunday requesting his assistance locating Marsaw. According to Patten, Marsaw fully complied with the federal agents.

Patten said the case will be turned over to the attorney general and sent to Washington, D.C., to determine if charges will be pursued.

Thompson issued a statement on X shortly after Trump was injured in the shooting, writing, “There is no room in American democracy for political violence. I am grateful for law enforcement’s fast response to this incident. I am glad the former President is safe, and my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved.”
