(NewsNation) — A dive into the net worth of each of the three contenders in the 2024 presidential race reveals exactly where their money is tied up.
Former President Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are the richest candidates, both coming from wealthy legacy families, while Vice President Kamala Harris earned much of her wealth through government service and book advances.
Here is a look at how much Trump, Harris and Kennedy are worth financially:
Donald Trump‘s net worth
Trump has a net worth of more than $6 billion, making him among the world’s richest 500 people, Bloomberg reported. But Trump is also steeped in significant debt due to court rulings against him.
His wife, Melania, is a former model and also has her own jewelry design and skincare lines.
Real estate: Trump’s real estate assets, including Trump Tower, three Florida homes and Trump International Hotel Las Vegas, equate to over $1.1 billion, according to 2023 estimates by Forbes. His clubs and resorts, including Mar-a-Lago, 10 golf courses across six states, his Miami resort and three European golf properties, have a value of $730 million, the outlet reported.
Social media companies: Trump’s net worth grew after Trump Media went public on March 26, Forbes reported. Trump Media and Technology Group, which is the parent company to his Truth Social platform, is estimated to be worth between around $180 million. Trump holds a nearly 65% stake in the company.
Inheritance: The New York Times reported that President Donald Trump received at least $413 million from his father over decades, much of that through dubious tax dodges, including outright fraud.
Liquid assets: According to Forbes estimates, Trump has more than $410 million in cash/liquid assets and $100 million in other assets.
Debts: However, Trump’s legal liabilities put a dent in his net worth, with Forbes saying his legal liabilities come out at $540 million. In February, a judge ordered Trump to pay a $454 million judgment in a civil fraud lawsuit brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, ruling that Trump inflated the value of his assets. Trump’s lawyers appealed the ruling.
Kamala Harris‘ net worth
According to her 2015 congressional finance disclosure, Harris‘ net worth was roughly $3.31 million, but that has grown significantly since her marriage to entertainment attorney Doug Emhoff in 2014. The couple have reported combined assets worth about $8 million.
Their assets mostly consist of cash, index funds, bonds and pensions, Forbes reported.
Salary: Her annual salary as vice president is $235,000.
Real estate: Harris sold her Washington, D.C., condo in 2021 for $1.85 million, and the couple currently owns a house in Brentwood, California, that Emhoff purchased in 2012 for $2.7 million, Forbes reported. Since then, the value of that house jumped to an estimated $4.4 million.
Books: She received an advance of more than $500,000 from publishing three books, including a memoir prior to taking office, according to the outlet.
Investments and Pensions: From 2015 until 2019, Emhoff reported dozens of publicly traded investments, according to annual reports filed by Harris when she was a senator. Harris is slated to begin receiving an estimated $8,200 in monthly payouts from her California pensions later this year, and her federal pension payments will likely begin in 2026.
Previous jobs: Prior to her marriage, Harris’ income largely came from her salaries as district attorney of San Francisco and attorney general of California, the outlet reported. In 2010, she reported earning $263,000. As attorney general, her reported income dropped to less than $160,000 a year, ABC reported. As a senator, Harris earned $174,000 a year. At that time, she had between $250,000 and $500,000 in a savings account and a similar amount of investments in retirement accounts, plus her pensions.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr.‘s net worth
Independent contender and environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s net worth is estimated to be about $15 million, which also includes assets from his wife, actress Cheryl Hines, according to Forbes.
Real Estate: The couple owns a $7 million home in Los Angeles and another $3 million home on the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, the outlet reported.
Inheritance: RFK Jr. got at least $4 million of inheritance assets, including a share in Wolf Point, a massive development in downtown Chicago, according to Forbes. He reported owning between $1.75 million and $6.5 million of equity in the project on financial disclosures, reported the outlet. He also disclosed a share in Arctic Royalty, a limited partnership with oil-and-gas leases in Texas and Oklahoma, worth between $31,000 and $115,000. Other inheritances include as much as $500,000 worth of investments held in stock, private equity and hedge funds.
Previous jobs: Kennedy earned more than $5 million working at his firm as an environmental lawyer from 2022 to 2023, though the practice’s profits are not consistent each year. He also earned money consulting with other law firms, which brought in more than $1.8 million during that same time. He also raked in more than $500,000 in income from Children’s Health Defense, a nonprofit he started that has been called out for its anti-vaccine work, Forbes reported.
Hines added almost $3 million in earnings from acting jobs and retirement accounts to their combined worth between 2022 and 2023.
Other assets: The couple also own between $100,000 and $250,000 of Bitcoin.
