(NewsNation) — Former President Donald Trump’s decision to select Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his vice president pick for the 2024 presidential ticket has been met with an outpouring of support from members of his party.
The former president made the announcement via his Truth Social account, saying Vance “will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond.”
Former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy told reporters outside the Republican National Convention that Vance is “an outstanding choice” for the ticket.
“His ability to be a great vice president for Trump — I think he’s an outstanding choice, and I support it,” Ramaswamy said. “He’s one of the few and one of the very best we have in the Senate.”
Trump chose Vance from a pool widely reported to include Sens. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and Tim Scott, R-S.C., and North Dakota Gov Doug Burgum.
Bergum took to X shortly after the announcement to back the Trump-Vance ticket.
“@realdonaldtrump is the strongest leader to enter the political arena in modern American history! Today he selected @JdVance1 as his running mate, whose small town roots and service to country make him a powerful voice for the America First Agenda,” Burgum wrote.
“I look forward to campaigning for the Trump-Vance ticket to Make America Great Again!”
Rubio also supported the move, simply tweeting, “#TrumpVance2024!!!”
X owner Elon Musk ostensibly approved of the appointment, tweeting that Trump and Vance “resounds with victory.”
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem hailed the selection on X. Noem wrote that the pair “will unite this country, and I look forward to doing whatever I can to help them win.”
The Biden-Harris ticket criticized the announcement in a statement on their behalf.
“Donald Trump picked J.D. Vance as his running mate because Vance will do what Mike Pence wouldn’t on January 6: bend over backwards to enable Trump and his extreme MAGA agenda, even if it means breaking the law and no matter the harm to the American people,” it read.
The statement also said Vance “supports a nationwide ban on abortion,” denounces the 2020 election results and would look to “enact Trump’s Project 2025 agenda.”
