Trump wants to return to town of shooting; is it safe?

(NewsNation) — Former President Donald Trump said Friday that he would like to return to Butler, Pennsylvania following the attempt on his life. Despite the shooting, security experts say it is doable.

“I would recommend they have an indoor event,” said former FBI agent Jonathan Gilliam. “But you see that the perimeter, it’s not like a metropolitan area; there aren’t that many buildings to secure.”

It’s unclear when or where the rally would take place. The Secret Service, which has come under scrutiny in the wake of the Butler rally, has urged Trump and his team against holding outdoor rallies following the shooting.

Trump held an outdoor rally in Butler on July 13. He was on stage for just a short time before gunshots rang out.

Gilliam said an outdoor rally could be secured, although he would “prefer” an indoor event.

“He could be secured. But the Secret Service has to do their job,” Gilliam said. “And that’s where my fear comes in. Because it doesn’t really matter what the local police department says, (protecting the president) is a Secret Service job.”
