Latest 2022 midterm updates: House, Senate control remain undecided

(NewsNation) — Millions of Americans head to the polls Tuesday to determine the balance of power in the U.S. House and Senate, and to decide crucial state races on everything from abortion restrictions to gubernatorial races to marijuana legalization to election reform.

Republican Ron Johnson projected winner in Wisconsin Senate race

NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ has called the race for Wisconsin senator in favor of Republican incumbent Sen. Ron Johnson.

Johnson’s bid for reelection against Democrat Mandela Barnes was bitter on both ends. 

Decision Desk: It’s possible night ends with Democrats holding House, Senate

A night that started with thoughts of a red wave is concluding with control of both the Senate and House still up in the air. Scott Tranter, adviser to Decision Desk HQ, said it won’t be possible to call the House of Representatives for either party overnight.

That statement alone is telling. Republicans were an overwhelming favorite to take control of the House – Decision Desk HQ gave the GOP an 80% chance. Decision Desk also gave Republicans a 57% chance to take the Senate on Monday.

Tranter told NewsNation’s Leland Vittert overnight it was possible now that Democrats could hold both the Senate and the House (though it remains likely that the GOP wins the House).

Tranter said the Republicans didn’t win many of the races they were expected to take from the Democrats in the House.

Fetterman: We ran on a woman’s right to choose, minimum wage and health care

NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ has called the Wisconsin governor’s race for incumbent Democrat Tony Evers.

He fought off a challenge from Tim Michels, a Republican businessman.

NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ has called the Oklahoma special Senate race for Republican Markwayne Mullin.

He defeated Democratic challenger Kendra Horn.

Republican Kevin Stitt projected winner in Oklahoma governor’s race

NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ has called the Oklahoma governor’s race for incumbent Republican Kevin Stitt.

He faced Democratic challenger Joy Hofmeister.

Here are the four Senate races that remain

With the Pennsylvania Senate race settled, only four crucial Senate races remain. These will determine which party holds the U.S. Senate.

  • Arizona: Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly and Republican Blake Masters
  • Georgia: Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock and Republican Herschel Walker
  • Nevada: Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto and Republican Adam Laxalt
  • Wisconsin: Democrat Mandela Barnes and Republican Sen. Ron Johnson

A Wisconsin decision is still a possibility this evening, but it’s unlikely the other three races will be projected in the next few hours.

Gretchen Whitmer projected winner in Michigan governor’s race

NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ has called the Michigan governor’s race for incumbent Democrat Gretchen Whitmer.

Whitmer fended off a challenge from Republican Tudor Dixon.

Democrat John Fetterman projected winner in Pennsylvania Senate race

NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ has called the Pennsylvania Senate race for Democrat John Fetterman.

Fetterman, the lieutenant governor of the state, defeated Republican challenger Mehmet Oz.

Democrat Jared Polis projected winner in Colorado governor’s race

NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ has called the Colorado governor’s race for incumbent Democrat Jared Polis.

Polis will now enter his second term as leader of the Centennial State.

Democrat Patty Murray projected winner in Washington Senate Race

NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ has called the Washington Senate race for incumbent Democrat Patty Murray.

Murray, who has held the seat since 1992, defeated Republican challenger Tiffany Smiley.

Democrat Vicente Gonzalez Jr. projected winner in Texas Congressional District 34

NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ has called the race in Texas’s 34th Congressional District for Democrat Vicente Gonzalez Jr..

Vicente Gonzalez Jr. defeated incumbent Republican Mayra Flores.

Republican Mike Crapo projected winner in Idaho Senate Race

NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ has called the Idaho Senate race for incumbent Republican Mike Crapo.

Crapo, who has held the seat since 1998, defeated Democratic challenger David Roth.

Democrat Christopher Deluzio projected winner in Pennsylvania Congressional District 17

NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ has called the race in Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District for Democrat Christopher Deluzio.

Deluzio defeated Republican Jeffrey Shaffer.

Democrat Wiley Nickel projected winner in North Carolina Congressional District 13

NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ has called the race in North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District for Democrat Wiley Nickel.

Nickel defeated Republican Bo Hine’s in the state’s newly formed congressional district.
