(NewsNation) — State Treasurer Democrat Seth Magaziner has won the congressional seat in Rhode Island being vacated by longtime U.S. Rep. Jim Langevin, according to Decision Desk HQ.
Magaziner’s defeat of Republican Allan Fung keeps the state in Democratic control.
The two competed to fill the seat previously held by Rep. Jim Langevin who retired this year.
While Rhode Island has typically leaned Democrat, the race was considered a toss-up, giving the Republicans the potential to flip a seat.
Also Tuesday according to Decision Desk HQ, voters elected Democratic Gov. Dan McKee to his first full term in office. The former lieutenant governor was a heavy favorite against Republican Ashley Kalus.
On Tuesday, 470 seats in the U.S. Congress — 35 Senate seats and all 435 House seats — are up for election. These elections will determine who has control over the two branches of Congress, and ultimately, who sets the agenda for President Joe Biden`s remaining years in office.
