FBI investigating alleged Trump campaign hack by Iran

(NewsNation) — As the 2024 campaigns ramp up, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence is warning both the Republican and Democratic parties could be impacted by foreign actors trying to meddle with the election.

The FBI announced it is now opening an investigation into the recent hack of former President Donald Trump’s campaign, which campaign officials say Iran was responsible for.

Trump’s campaign has not offered specific evidence of Iran’s involvement, but in a report last week, Microsoft said Iran-backed hackers targeted a high-ranking official at an unidentified U.S. presidential campaign in a June spear-phishing attack.

The investigation will also look at previous attempts to hack President Biden’s campaign and whether Biden’s campaign aides were possible targets of hackers, a source familiar with the matter told NewsNation.

The attempts at hacking Biden’s campaign appear to have been unsuccessful, but neither campaign has shared much about how they are planning to strengthen cybersecurity ahead of the November election.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign says “Our campaign vigilantly monitors and protects against cyber threats, and we are not aware of any security breaches of our systems,” in light of the recent cyber attacks.
