(NewsNation) — The former and current presidents of the United States are trying to use Thursday’s hush money verdict to their advantage.
Former President Donald Trump’s campaign says it’s raised at least $53 million since Trump was found guilty of concealing his company’s hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels.
“We’re dealing with a corrupt government. We have a corrupt country,” Trump told reporters on Friday. “We’re going to be appealing this scam,” he added.
“From just minutes after the sham trial verdict was announced, our digital fundraising system was overwhelmed with support,” Trump campaign senior advisers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles said in a joint statement Friday.
Trump’s fundraising page crashed shortly after the verdict was announced, an issue his campaign attributed to an influx of donations.
Current President Joe Biden took the opportunity to again blast Trump for his complaints about the trial, saying the verdict again shows that nobody is above the law.
“Donald Trump was given every opportunity to defend himself,” Biden said on Friday. “It’s reckless, it’s dangerous, it’s irresponsible for anyone to say this was rigged just because they don’t like the verdict.”
The website YouGov’s national survey says 50% agree with the Trump verdict, 30% disagree and 19% say they’re not sure if they agree.
YouGov is a survey site that pays people to offer their opinions on politics, sports, entertainment and other subjects. As of May 31, 2,766 U.S. adults responded to the Trump verdict survey.
As for the overall race, Decision Desk HQ’s Saturday aggregate of 720 individual polls puts Trump ahead of Biden by just 1.5%.
