Pack your bags — themed cruises gaining popularity

(NewsNation) — Thousands of like-minded people are boarding cruises dedicated to themes ranging from Taylor Swift to Spice Girls and sports.

Cruises dedicated to movies, TV shows, specific decades, holidays and adult themes are gaining popularity.

NewsNation Travel Editor Peter Greenberg joined “NewsNation Now” to discuss the themed cruises and what travelers should expect.

“There are 3 million more people traveling by cruise ship this year than there were last year, and now, they’re looking for affinity groups that really have special interests that get catered to on those ships,” he said.

The appeal comes as vessels grow better equipped for live performances, Greenberg added.

“Many ships are now equipping themselves with the Starlink satellite system, which holds a signal so that you can go take your cruise, and basically, you’ll watch the Super Bowl on the cruise,” he said.

Greenberg said those interested in a themed cruise will have to act quickly to keep pace with sales and cabin space. Travelers should also note that specialty cruises can be more expensive.

“There’s one other caution I want to give you,” he said. “If they don’t sell out the whole cruise to people who just love theme characters or ‘The Golden Girls’ (for example), you’ll find yourself on a regular cruise surrounded by people you don’t want to be with,” Greenberg said.
