MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The family of Tyre Nichols wants to hear from you on how to best design a skate park here in Memphis in his honor.
Friday, Nichols’ family, as well as the Tyre Nichols Foundation and The Skatepark Project, are holding a meeting to work out the best design for the park.
It will take place at the National Civil Rights Museum from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
As you will remember, Nichols was a devout skateboarder. His family says he fell in love with the sport at a young age and it wasn’t long before it became his lifestyle.
A location for this new park hasn’t yet been approved here in Memphis, but in California, where Nichols is originally from, opened in June of last year.
It is actually the same park Nichols skated at when he was a kid.
As far as the former Memphis Police officers charged in Nichols’ death, the federal trial against four of them will be held here in Memphis.
The decision comes after several pending motions to move the trial following concerns about whether or not the four men will be able to have a fair trial here in Shelby County.
It was back in January of last year that the four defendants, along with a fifth former officer Desmond Mills, were caught on video pepper spraying and beating Nichols following a traffic stop down the street from his mother’s house.
