Family warns of mirror dangers after close call with car seat

BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. (WTRF) — It was an average day for Emily Perna and her baby when, out of the blue, the car seat her child was in began to smoke.

Perna says the incident happened very fast. When she opened the door to take her baby out of the car, direct sunlight reflected off the mirror and onto the edge of the car seat.

Soon afterward, Perna went to Facebook to warn other moms and parents about the potential dangers of backseat mirrors.

“What’s really confusing when I tell this story is people think that it was shining through the window, it wasn’t because the door was open. So, it came directly from the sun to the mirror to the car seat.”

Perna says although other parents have suggested different mirrors or cameras, she is keeping them out of the car for the time being.
