1.2M rechargeable lights recalled nationwide after death, fires

(NEXSTAR) — Illinois-based Good Earth Lighting Inc. is recalling more than 1.2 million units of its Good Earth Rechargeable Integrated Lights after the reported death of one user and reports of injury and/or fires from others.

Customers should immediately stop using the lights, which contain lithium iron batteries that can potentially overheat and cause the lights’ plastic housing to catch flame, according to the recall.

The recalled units can be identified by their model numbers and specifications:

The lights were sold nationally at Lowe’s, Ace Hardware, Meijer and Menards, in addition to other home improvement and hardware stores. The recalled items were also offered for sale online at Good Earth Lighting’s website, Amazon and QVC. The lights were sold between October 2017 and January 2024, costing about $20 for a single unit or around $35 for a bundle.

In addition to the report of one customer’s death, another user reported being treated for smoke inhalation after the product caused a fire in their home, Good Earth Lighting says. There are reports of nine other incidents, including six that resulted in fire damage, according to the company.

Customers with the affected lights are recommended to contact Good Earth Lighting for a free replacement item of equal value to the purchase price of the recalled item, according to the recall.

Good Earth Lighting also warns that about 37,800 Rechargeable Integrated Lights were sold in Canada.

In a statement to Nexstar Thursday, Good Earth Lighting said in part: “After investigating the circumstances behind the ten reported incidents involving these lights out of 1.2 million fixtures sold, Good Earth Lighting decided to conduct a voluntary recall in partnership with the CPSC.  Out of an abundance of caution, we removed the lights involved in these incidents from sale to the public in January… [we] will continue to hold ourselves to the highest quality and safety standards so that consumers feel safe and confident in their decision to purchase our highly energy-efficient and eco-friendly lighting products.”
