SUFFOLK, Va. (NewsNation) — Two people are dead after a structural collapse at a site where an Amazon Fulfillment Center is being built in Suffolk on Saturday, police said.
Police and firefighters responded to the scene of the industrial accident in the southeastern city at around 2 p.m. ET. Emergency crews confirmed that two people were killed in the collapse, police said.
Tim Kelley, a spokesman for the city, said the victims were working at the site at the time, NewsNation affiliate WAVY reported.
“It’s an incident where two people lost their lives. That’s a somber scene no matter what the circumstances are,” Kelley said.
Emergency crews also searched for additional missing workers. Police said that all workers at the job site have been accounted for, and no additional injuries were reported.
“From my eyes, there was debris that they were going through to make sure there were no other victims in there,” Kelley said. “They were also making sure there were no deceased or injured parties involved.”
Suffolk police and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the collapse, WAVY reported.
Police haven’t yet named the victims as they work to contact their families.
