CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — An oven in a Chesterfield County home was destroyed Thursday night after fire officials say a resident put a loaded gun inside and turned it on, causing the gun to fire off multiple shots.

On Thursday, Sept. 5, firefighters with Chesterfield County Fire & EMS responded to a Chesterfield home for a report of an oven explosion.

When they arrived, firefighters examined the oven and found a handgun inside. A photo from the scene appears to show it partially melted into one of the oven’s racks.

According to fire officials, someone placed the loaded gun in the oven and turned it on. When the gun heated up, it went off, shooting a total of five rounds.

No one was injured during this incident.

“When you place any item in the oven it is easy to forget it is there, which can lead to a fire or something worse when you turn it on,” fire officials said on Facebook. “You should also make sure to properly store your firearms. Keep them somewhere secure, like a gun safe.”
