NEAR SAN CLEMENTE ISLAND, Calif. (News Nation) — One Marine is dead, two were injured and another eight are missing after an “amphibious assault vehicle mishap” late Thursday near an island off the coast of California located west of San Diego and south of Los Angeles.

The Marine with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit was pronounced dead at a hospital, military officials said in a statement to News Nation.

Two were also taken to nearby hospitals, where one Marine was listed in critical condition. The other is in stable condition.

Eight service members remain missing, according to Marine officials. Search and rescue efforts are underway with the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy.

Fifteen Marines and one Sailor were inside the amphibious assault vehicle, often used by the Marine Corps to get from ship to shore, at the time of the incident.

Names of the service members have not been released. The Marine who died was part of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit out of Camp Pendleton in California.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident. I ask that you keep our Marines, Sailors, and
their families in your prayers as we continue our search,” said Col. Christopher Bronzi, 15th MEU
Commanding Officer in a statement.

According to military officials, the 15th MEU and Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group were taking part in “a routine training exercise” near San Clemente Island, when Marines reported “taking on water” at approximately 5:45 p.m. (PST).

San Clemente Island is owned and operated by the United States Navy.

The incident is under investigation, the Marine Corps said in a statement.
