Record-breaking 29th-named storm of tropical season forms in Atlantic

MIAMI (AP) — Forecasters say Subtropical storm Theta has formed in the open Atlantic, becoming the 29th-named storm of tropical season. That breaks the record.

The storm was located around 1,000 miles southwest of the Azores. The storm has a maximum sustained winds of 50 MPH and is moving east at 15 MPH.

The storm is expected to continue in an east-northeast direction over the coming days and forecasters say Theta might slightly strengthen in the next 12 to 24 hours.

The center said Theta broke a previous record of 28 named storms set in 2005.

This is a developing story.
