4. Are asylums the answer to mental illness in homeless population?

A guide dressed as a nurse stands in the hallway of Ward C in the main building of the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, West Virginia on August 24, 2013. Later called the Armand Auclerc Weston State Hospital, the Kirkbride psychiatric hospital was operated from 1864 until 1994 by the US government. In the mid-19th century, psychiatrist Thomas Story Kirkbride designed a mental asylum floor plan based on a philosophy of Moral Treatment including sunlight, fresh air, privacy and comfort for patients. The notion of “building-as-cure” was largely discredited by the1900s and the large institutions became too expensive to maintain. Originally designed to hold 200 patients, numbers swelled to over 2,000 at the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in the 1950s. It was forcibly closed in 1994 due to changes in treatments of patients. The now privately owned building complex is opened to tours and other money raising events, the proceeds of which go to the restoration and preservation of this historic landmark.
