Milton: Hurricane Milton plowed through Florida late Wednesday into Thursday morning, packing powerful winds, dangerous storm surge and flooding. Since the hurricane made landfall along the Gulf Coast as a Category 3 storm and weakened, millions of power outages and at least 10 deaths have been reported. Florida Gov. Much of what the agency does is give out money in the immediate aftermath of a disaster. That can include assistance to individuals affected by disasters, such as payments of $750 to pay for their immediate needs — like medicine or diapers — after a storm or earthquake hits. Gas shortages: Florida could see gas shortages for several weeks with two crucial ports for fuel still not operational in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton. About a quarter of all of the nearly 7,900 gas stations in the state of Florida do not have gas or power. Gold mine rescue: One person died and 12 people were rescued after being trapped for hours at the bottom of a former gold mine in Colorado when an elevator malfunctioned at the tourist site, officials said. The elevator was descending into the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine near Cripple Creek when it experienced a mechanical problem at around 500 feet beneath the surface. Polling: Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are nearly tied in major swing states that will likely play a deciding role in the November election, according to polls released Thursday by The Hill and Emerson College Polling. Trump narrowly leads Harris, 49% to 48%, in each of Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, while in Arizona, he leads 49% to 47%.
