The city has been dragged into the national spotlight this week over unsubstantiated claims that Haitian migrants are eating pets — claims the city’s mayor and police say they can’t substantiate. Some residents have pushed back on the claims but insisted their city is at a breaking point due to the influx of migrants. Boeing strike: Aircraft assembly workers at Boeing factories near Seattle and elsewhere walked off the job early Friday morning. The move comes after union members voted overwhelmingly to go on strike and turn down a tentative contract that would have raised wages by 25% over four years. The strike started less than three hours after the local branch of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers announced 94.6% of voting workers rejected the proposed contract and 96% approved the work stoppage. Social Security: The next cost-of-living increase for Social Security recipients — which was already projected to be the lowest in years — is continuing to drop, according to the latest figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Based on the department’s consumer price index data through August, Social Security recipients might expect a 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment to their payments next year, according to The Senior Citizens League.
