Good morning! It’s Monday, August 3, 2020. Here’s a look at your news across the nation:

️⃣🌀 Hurricane warnings have been issued for Isaias as it heads toward the Carolinas. The storm is expected to strengthen back to a Category 1 hurricane on Monday. Over the weekend, heavy rain from the tropical storm hit Florida’s east coast. Why it matters: This is the first test of how states handle tropical-related evacuations amid the coronavirus pandemic.

️⃣🔥 Meanwhile, the West Coast is dealing with evacuations of its own. Thousands of people remain under evacuation orders Monday morning after a wildfire in mountains east of Los Angeles grew in size and forced crews to battle flames in triple-digit heat. Why it matters: The fire in Riverside County has consumed more than 32 square miles of dry brush and timber. It is 5% contained.

️⃣⚖ A hearing in an Idaho courtroom on Monday could offer new details in a missing kids’ case that captured worldwide attention. Chad Daybell, 52, has been charged with concealing evidence by destroying or hiding the bodies of 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan at his eastern Idaho home. Investigators found their remains during a search in June, months after the kids were last seen in September. Why it matters: Prosecutors will begin sketching out their evidence against the couple, offering potential new details in an investigation with ties to other mysterious deaths.

️⃣👗 Lord & Taylor, one of America’s oldest department stores, has filed for bankruptcy, joining a growing list of stores damaged by the coronavirus pandemic. Tailored Brands, the parent company of Men’s Wearhouse and Jos. A. Banks, filed for bankruptcy as well. Why it matters: As of July 23, roughly 40 retailers, including big and small companies, had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy so far this year. That exceeds the number of retail bankruptcies for all of last year.
