VEVEY, Switzerland (NewsNation Now) — Executives at Nestlé said Monday they are making the company’s food packaging more sustainable.

They say they are now making 87% of packaging with recyclable or reusable materials.

Nestlé reports it is closer to meeting its goal of making all of its packaging sustainable by 2025.

“We have made strides in our transformative journey towards a waste-free future, but we know that we have more work to do. As the world’s largest food and beverage company, we’re committed to putting our size and scale to work to tackle the packaging waste problem everywhere that we operate,” the company’s head of sustainable packaging Véronique Cremades-Mathis said in a statement.

The environmental group Greenpeace has regularly cited Nestlé as one of the top plastic polluters in the world.

In January, Matthias Wüthrich, a senior campaigner at Greenpeace Switzerland, said the commitment by the company was “a good first step.”

“It is encouraging that Nestlé has finally committed to reducing its reliance on virgin plastic and recognizes that its dependence on fossil fuel-derived plastic is contributing to climate change. Reducing single-use plastic should not mean that Nestlé turns to false solutions such as recycled content and material substitution. If Nestlé wants to stop polluting the world, it needs to end its reliance on plastic,” Wüthrich said in a statement.
