STILLWATER, Okla. (NewsNation Now) — Oklahoma State and Tulsa universities will have to wait an extra week to begin their 2020 college football season.

Oklahoma State University announced Monday that the home-opener game against the University of Tulsa has been postponed, NewsNation affiliate KFOR reported.

The two teams were set to play this Saturday, Sept. 12. That game has now been rescheduled for Sept. 19 at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater.

Oklahoma State University reported seven COVID-19 cases among their football team, while the University of Tulsa missed 10 out of a possible 17 days of practice due to coronavirus.

“The safety and health of our student-athletes is always at the core of all of our discussions and decisions,” said Derrick Gragg, Tulsa’s vice president and director of athletics. “Without time to properly prepare physically we would be putting our student-athletes at a greater risk of injury.”

No official game time has yet been set.

Oklahoma State is the second Big 12 team to postpone its opener this weekend. A virus outbreak on TCU’s team led the Horned Frogs to put off their game Friday against SMU. Those teams don’t have a common open date the rest of the scheduled regular season.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
