CLEVELAND (NewsNation Now) — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly crash after a dump truck struck a highway sign causing the sign to fall on a passing pickup truck.

A dump truck, with its bed raised, hit the base of an overhead sign causing it to fall onto the pickup truck on the westbound lanes of Interstate 480 and State Road at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning, the patrol said. The driver of the pickup, a 65-year-old man, died at the scene, according to Cleveland EMS officials.

The metal sign, which rose above three lanes of traffic, appeared to land on the hood of the pickup, which was traveling in a middle lane.

I-480 westbound is temporarily down to one lane and the exit ramp to State Road is closed. The Ohio Department of Transportation is setting up detours.

The cause of the initial accident remains under investigation.

The name of the person killed has not been released.
