WASHINGTON (NewsNation Now) — A report unveiled this week by House Republicans alleges that China’s purported aggression against the United States has gone unchallenged for too long.

“We found an unhealthy relationship,” said Rep. John Curtis (R-Utah). “And I think it’s important to note, we’re not asking to terminate the relationship at all, we’re not asking for decoupling. We want to fix the relationship; we need a healthy relationship with China. And so the report really goes through and lists ways for us to get that relationship back into a scenario where it’s mutually beneficial for both countries.”

Curtis says the report highlights concerns about human rights violations, dangers to American national security and supply chains for medical equipment.

Democrats did not participate in the China Task Force. 

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) says there’s bipartisan concern about China, but this GOP effort had different goals.

“I think the working group was established with a political purpose in mind,” said Schiff. “And that’s a very different kind of an exercise. And I don’t think that’s one that’s going to attract much bipartisan support. But if we keep a focus on the merits — on the challenge posed by China — I think we could find a lot of bipartisan ground.

Republicans say the report is the most comprehensive look at the U.S.-China relationship in a long time and that it came with more than 400 policy recommendations.
