AUSTIN, Texas (NewsNation Now) — The two candidates for Texas’ U.S. Senate seat went head-to-head in a debate on Friday night.

Incumbent Republican Sen. John Cornyn and Democratic challenger MJ Hegar answered questions from NewsNation affiliate KXAN-TV in Austin, Texas.

The two met at a socially distanced debate and fielded questions ranging from coronavirus pandemic response to police reform.

Cornyn has served as Texas senator since 2002. Hegar is an Air Force veteran.

NewsNation affiliates also hosted a debate in South Carolina on Friday night.
