CHICAGO (NewsNation Now) — The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the United States surpassed 9 million Friday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

Just Thursday, the country set a record for the most coronavirus cases confirmed in a single day at 88,521, Johns Hopkins data shows.

More than 229,000 Americans have died since the start of the pandemic.

17 states reported their highest daily number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients since the pandemic started, according to a Reuters tally.

That tally shows more than 1,000 people died of the virus on Thursday, marking the third time in October that milestone has been passed in a single day. The number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients has risen over 50% in October to 46,000, the highest since mid-August.

Reuters contributed to this report. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
