6 injured after being shot outside Oregon concert venue
EUGENE, Ore. (NewsNation Now) — Six people were hospitalized, with at least one in critical condition, after being shot at a concert hall in Oregon Friday night.
The suspected shooter was not yet in custody as of Saturday afternoon, police said.
Officers responded to the WOW Hall in Eugene after reports of a shooting around 9:30 p.m., police said in a statement.
Police believe the suspect, described as an armed and dangerous man in a hoodie, fled the scene. Authorities did not have any further description of him.
“What law enforcement found when they came on the scene is what you would exactly expect when six people just got shot,” Eugene Police Chief Chris Skinner said at a news conference. “People are just trying to get out of here, their friends are on the ground, they’re trying to help.”
The shooting happened in a back parking lot outside the venue where a concert featuring Lil Bean & Zay Bang and other artists was being held.
Skinner described “chaos” when officers arrived, and said investigators had not received much information from possible witnesses.
“We know we have witnesses, we know we probably have video and audio evidence that’s available,” Skinner said. “We just need people to feel comfortable to bring that forward.”
WOW Hall released a statement on its website acknowledging the shooting but declining to speculate on any details.
“We at the WOW Hall want to thank all first responders who came so quickly to ensure everyone’s safety and administer first aid,” the message said. “We believe all staff and volunteers are safe and accounted for.”
NewsNation local affiliate KOIN in Portland reported that Skinner said it is one of the “highest-profile” shootings the city of Eugene has seen.
Investigators have not determined whether the shooting was random or targeted, the police chief said.
Eugene, with a population of 176,464, is located about 110 miles south of Portland, Oregon.
