OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (WATE) — Pets can benefit elderly individuals, helping them get out of the house, meet new people, reduce stress, and even aid learning. Considering these benefits, Diversicare of Oak Ridge in eastern Tennessee has launched a new Caregivers for Cats and Canines initiative.
The Communications Director of Diversicare, Dustin Williamson, has collaborated with the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter to bring residents out once a month to allow them to spend time with the animals.
Williamson has also organized donations of supplies from the Anderson County community, nursing staff, and corporate staff to bring on their visit to the shelter. Williamson advertised on their Facebook page and word of mouth. Some donated supplies included blankets, food, and dog and cat toys.

The partnership between Diversicare and the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter has greatly benefited the residents and the animals involved.
The program is especially valuable for individuals living in the group facility, as Williamson says community work will help to improve their well-being. This initiative encourages residents to meet new furry friends, boost serotonin levels, and contribute positively to the community.
As Williamson puts it, “Spending time with animals is good for the soul.”
