Taco Bell’s newest menu item is a take on a classic
(WXIN) – Taco Bell’s newest offering is hitting the menu this week: The fast-food chain plans to introduce its Cheesy Chicken Crispanada on Thursday.
The Crispanada, first tested in Tennessee last year, is Taco Bell’s take on an empanada, a type of pastry turnover stuffed with a variety of savory fillings that can be either baked or fried. (A review from Business Insider during the 2023 testing phase described the Crispanada as fried; a representative from Taco Bell was not immediately available to confirm how the item is prepared.)
The restaurant says its Cheesy Chicken Crispanada consists of chicken slow-cooked with garlic, tomato and onion, alongside a three-cheese blend of Monterey pepper jack, cheddar and mozzarella cheeses.
“The menu item takes inspiration from the beloved empanada and is fused with the Taco Bell flavors fans already love,” the company said.
Taco Bell had previously announced plans to test its Crispanada at select Tennessee locations in March 2023, where it was served with a side of ranch dipping sauce. A national rollout was announced Feb. 9, 2024, during Taco Bell’s “Live Más LIVE” event in Las Vegas.
The event also teased numerous items to be added to the menu in 2024, including an entire Cantina Chicken Menu, which includes a soft taco, burrito and quesadilla made with slow-cooked chicken.
The Cheesy Chicken Crispanada will be priced at $3.49 at participating U.S. Taco Bell restaurants, though prices may vary. The item will also only be available for a limited time, according to Taco Bell.
