(NewsNation) — During the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade shooting, some fans heroically stepped in and stopped one of the alleged shooters from harming more people in the crowd.

Trey and Casey Filter, lifelong Chiefs fans from Wichita, found themselves thrust into a nightmare scenario as gunfire erupted amid the festivities. However, their instinctive response showcased extraordinary courage and selflessness.

“We just did what we felt we needed to do in that moment. I don’t think we could have just walked away being right there like that,” Casey Filter said Wednesday on NewsNation’s “CUOMO.”

Video shows Trey Filter tackling one of the alleged shooters, effectively restraining him, while Casey Filter, upon seeing the weapon on the ground, swiftly moved it away from the scene. Their actions likely prevented further harm and aided in securing the situation until law enforcement arrived.

“That was my first thought when I saw it on the ground right in front of me. It was at my feet. And I just saw it and just moved it,” Casey Filter recounted.

Despite the traumatic experience, the Filters’ children expressed pride in their father’s courageous actions. As the family reflected on the events during their journey home, they realized the gravity of how close they came to danger.

“They’re pretty proud of their dad,” Casey Filter said.

“It’s just really a lot to process and to be grateful for,” Trey Filter added.

Alyssa Marsh-Contreras also witnessed her father, Paul Contreras, tackle an alleged shooting suspect before police arrived.

“It all started off as a celebration. As soon as the celebration was done, we heard eight to 10 pops. Everybody assumed it was fireworks of some sort … until seconds later, we see multiple cops chasing them,” Marsh-Contreras said on “Banfield.”

Marsh-Contreras said her dad jumped on the offender’s back and pushed him face-down to the ground while Trey Filter worked to hold down the suspect’s legs.

“It’s just so crazy to see something like this. You expect something like this to happen so far away from you, and to see it on the news,” Marsh-Contreras said. “For it to be just a couple yards, a couple feet away, it’s very scary.”

At least three people have been taken into custody.

Nine children were among the 22 gunshot victims after multiple shots were fired Wednesday near the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl rally in Missouri, authorities said.

One person was killed, a mother of two, identified by her radio station, KKFI.

The chaotic scenes unfolded as more than 800 officers managed the massive crowd gathered for the celebration in the heart of Kansas City. Witnesses described a sudden surge of panic as attendees attempted to flee the area upon hearing gunshots.
