NEW YORK (NewsNation) — Eight people charged in connection with the brutal beating of two New York Police Department officers in Times Square last month will appear in court Friday morning, with one suspect now linked to another crime.
Investigators released photos of suspects who stole hundreds of dollars worth of clothes from a department store and assaulted a security guard who intervened. Those pictures led police to connect the two crimes.
Darwin Gomez Izquiel and others charged in the Times Square attack will appear before a New York City judge, after being released without bail last month — a decision from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office that sparked outrage for many, including fellow officers.
It’s the second time in less than a month that Gomez-Izquiel was taken away in handcuffs by the NYPD. This latest incident involved a robbery Tuesday when he and two others allegedly stole $600 worth of clothes from Macy’s at the Queens Center Mall and assaulted a security guard.
Gomez-Izquiel is charged with robbery and petty larceny. On Friday, a judge is expected to announce what his bail, if any, will be set at.
Body camera footage led police to Gomez-Izquiel and seven others who allegedly assaulted officers near a migrant shelter in Times Square.
One suspect pleaded not guilty to second-degree assault. All suspects in the attack are expected in court Friday.
Yohenry Brito, an alleged instigator, was released on $15,000 bail this week after being held on Rikers Island.
