THE BRONX, N.Y. (WPIX) – A disembodied leg found on the New York City subway tracks may have belonged to a man who was fatally struck by a train miles away, according to law enforcement sources.

The leg was discovered Saturday in the Bronx, on the roadbed of the No. 4 train between the 167th and 170th Street Stations, a spokesperson for the NYPD confirmed. Officers responded to the site around 1 p.m. after being alerted to the discovery.

Sources told NewsNation affiliate WPIX that the appendage was first spotted by a train conductor who was doing a sweep the morning after a snowstorm. The conductor was able to stop the train before running over the leg, they told WPIX.

Now, officials believe the leg belonged to a man that had been struck by a train at a Manhattan subway station several days before on the night of Feb. 12, WPIX learned.

According to law enforcement sources, the man was hit and killed at the Spring Street subway station in Lower Manhattan, which is around 9 miles south of the area where the leg was discovered.

They believe the limb may have been dragged from Lower Manhattan to the Bronx by one of the trains.

The victim has not yet been identified by the New York Police Department. A spokesperson for the NYPD previously indicated the limb had been transferred to the NYC medical examiner’s office.

The incident doesn’t appear to be suspicious, sources said.
