President Biden is holding on to his lead over former President Trump, the GOP front-runner, in new poll ahead of a potential rematch in November.

In the Quinnipiac University poll, released Wednesday, 49 percent of registered voters said they support Biden, compared to 45 percent who chose Trump.

The lead for Biden is slightly narrower compared to the 50 percent he received in the same poll in January, when Trump received 44 percent.

Biden’s lead was tighter, however, among independents — a crucial group in 2024 — per the survey. Roughly 44 percent of independents who responded to the survey said they support Biden, compared to 42 percent who said they would back Trump.

Among Democrats, 93 percent said they support Biden, compared to 91 percent of Republicans who support Trump, the survey found.

When the hypothetical match-up included independent candidates Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Cornel West, as well as Green Party candidate Jill Stein, Biden led with 38 percent compared to Trump’s 37 percent.

The aggregation of polls kept by The Hill/Decision Desk HQ shows the former president with a 2.7 percentage point lead over Biden in a hypothetical head-to-head contest.

The most recent Quinnipiac University poll also found that 67 percent of voters think Biden, 81, is too old to serve another four years effectively, while 57 percent think Trump, 77, isn’t too old for another term.

Only 35 percent of voters in the new survey thought Biden has the physical fitness for another term and 34 percent thought he had the mental fitness. Meanwhile, 60 percent of voters thought Trump had the physical fitness and 48 percent thought he had the mental fitness for another term.

The poll was conducted Feb. 15-19 with 1,421 registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.
