Haley campaign touts $1 million haul but major donor stops spending
- Haley's campaign says it has raised $1M since Saturday's primary
- A major Koch-backed group has stopped spending in support of Haley
- Haley has vowed to remain in the race until Super Tuesday
(NewsNation) — Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley‘s campaign says it has raised $1 million from “grassroots supporters alone” in the 24 hours after former President Donald Trump won the Palmetto State with roughly 60% of the vote.
“The continued surge of small-dollar donations demonstrates Haley’s staying power and her appeal to broad swaths of the American public,” the campaign said in a release.
The fundraising announcement comes shortly after Americans for Prosperity Action (AFP Action), the political wing of the conservative network led by billionaire Charles Koch, announced it’s done spending in support of Haley.
“Given the challenges in the primary states ahead, we don’t believe any outside group can make a material difference to widen her path to victory,” AFP Action CEO Emily Seidel wrote in an email to staff.
Seidel said the group stands by its endorsement of Haley but will focus its resources where they will make a difference — the U.S. Senate and House.
“Losing that Koch infrastructure is a big deal, it was not just money, it’s people to volunteer, it’s people to knock on doors, it’s the grassroots that so many candidates love to have access to,” said Mick Mulvaney, former Trump White House acting chief of staff and a NewsNation political contributor.
Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday mocking the Koch-aligned group, writing that they “got played for suckers right from the beginning.”
Despite Saturday’s loss in her home state, Haley has vowed to remain in the race and is now headed to Michigan to campaign.
“I’m a woman of my word. I’m not giving up this fight when a majority of Americans disapprove of both Donald Trump and Joe Biden,” Haley told her supporters Saturday evening.
