Trader Joe’s cashews recalled in 16 states due to salmonella contamination

(NewsNation/TMX) — Some Trader Joe’s-branded cashew nuts are being recalled over potential salmonella contamination, according to a notice posted Monday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
California-based Wenders LLC is recalling certain lots of Trader Joe’s 50% Less Sodium Roasted & Salted Whole Cashews with SKU Number 37884 sold in 16 states because the may be contaminated with salmonella.
Nuts affected by the recall include Lot numbers T12139, T12140, T12141, and T12142, sold at Trader Joe’s locations in AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, ID, KS, LA, NM, NV, OK, OR, TN, TX, UT, and WA.
The company said no illnesses have been reported to date. The issue was discovered through routine FDA testing during import.
Salmonella is a potentially deadly bacterium, according to the FDA. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and headache. While most healthy people recover from salmonella infection without treatment, it can be potentially fatal for young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
Consumers should not eat the recalled nuts, and are advised to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
