MOUNT GILEAD, Ohio (WCMH) — Seventy dogs died Tuesday morning after a fire at a Morrow County, Ohio, puppy mill.

According to a spokesperson with the Johnsville Fire Department, the fire occurred around 1 a.m. at 4836 State Route 314 in Mount Gilead. The fire chief said the building is an Amish puppy mill, and it took 40 minutes to get the blaze under control.

Seventy dogs were killed in the fire, with residents able to save 17 other dogs before firefighters arrived. One puppy was found inside the building alive and was rescued. The fire’s cause was determined to be one of the owners putting wood into a wood burning stove more than an hour before the fire.
