(NewsNation) — Multiple people were injured after a school bus crashed Tuesday in North Carolina.

NewsNation local affiliate WJZY reports the single-vehicle accident happened at 7:23 a.m. in the eastern part of Burke County.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the bus driver was traveling west when they lost control, ran off the right side of the road, struck a ditch and “overturned.” Troopers said the driver was cited for failure to maintain lane control, WJZY reported.

The nine middle and high school students, bus driver and bus monitor on board at the time all sustained injuries, WJZY reported. The bus monitor had to be airlifted to a Charlotte hospital, and one person was released to a parent. The others were taken to UNC Health Blue Ridge Valdese, UNC Health Blue Ridge Morganton and Frye Regional Medical Center.

All students and the bus driver have been or are in the process of being discharged from area hospitals, Burke County Schools confirmed to WJZY, while the bus monitor remained hospitalized.

Burke County Public Schools Superintendent Mike Swan said the students involved are doing well and the bus driver’s injuries “appear to be minor.”

“Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the bus monitor and her family. We want to thank all of the first responders, law enforcement and medical staff at the area hospitals who responded quickly and treated all of those involved,” Swan said in a statement. “We were quickly able to contact the students’ parents and guardians, and we had district personnel with the students and families at the hospitals up to the point of their discharge.”
