EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) — The U.S. Border Patrol on Wednesday confirmed that shots were fired from Mexico toward agents in El Paso’s Lower Valley.

An agency spokesman said the incident happened in San Elizario, Texas, near International Marker 51 of the border wall.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a statement to Border Report that Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Paso Sector were involved in a “use of force incident while responding to reports of shots fired near the border in the Ysleta Station area of responsibility in Texas.”

Agents from the El Paso Sector said the shots were fired just before 5 p.m. MST.

The Border Patrol said it notified and asked authorities in Mexico to look for the gunman or gunmen.

Police across the border in Juarez, Mexico, said they searched a 9-mile stretch of the river but found no evidence of armed individuals.

There were no injuries.

CBP said the incident is under review by the agency’s Office of Professional Responsibility and that more information will be shared “as it becomes available.”
